If you have a loved one in your family with Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to learn all that you can about fall prevention to keep your loved one safe in the home.

Always remember that people with Alzheimer’s disease are at a very high risk for falls. They also have a harder time walking, and the sense of balance tends to deteriorate as the disease progresses. Some patients have trouble moving around furniture and other obstacles in the home. Even getting from the bed to the chair can be hard as the disease gets worse.

Fortunately, there are many things that you can do in your home to reduce the chance of falls. With the many Alzheimer’s aids on the market today, it is easier than ever to make the home safe for your Alzheimer’s patient.

Look At the Home as an Outsider

Do you have tables with sharp edges? Is there any furniture that will move easily when it is leaned upon. Are the walkways clear of any obstructions. Is there anything on the floor that someone can trip on? Are there pets that the patient could trip over?

You should get rid of as many of these obstacles and problem areas as you can. Then, you should take a hard look at the patient herself. Does she have shoes that are non skid? Tennis shoes or house slippers with rubber soles are the best. It is a bad idea to let the patient walk around in socks as they will slip.

Your loved one might be at the point where it is hard for her to walk. However, they still may try to stand up and to walk on their own. There are still some things that you can do to make them stay safe. For example, you should make sure some of their most needed things are within easy reach. Sometimes it is better for them to be sitting at a table with things that can keep their hands busy, rather than just putting them in front of the TV.

Alzheimer’s Alarms Available

There are several Alzheimer’s supplies on the market that are a type of alarm that can prevent a fall. These alarms will clip to the clothes. When they stand up, the alarm will separate and the sound will go off.

There also is a Wireless Wander Door Alarm that you can buy that is great to let you know if the patient opens a door.

Another very helpful  Alzheimer’s product to prevent a fall is the Safe-T Mate Wheelchair Anti Rollback Device. This will stop the wheelchair from rolling back. The tires are grabbed and stopped when your patient tries to sit or stand. This will really prevent many potential falls and will keep the Alzheimer’s patient safe.
