The latest research indicates that a brain-healthy diet encourages good blood flow to the brain, as well as reduces risk of heart disease, and is lower in cholesterol and fat. Just like the heart, our brains need the proper nutrients, such as protein and sugar, to function properly. Note that a brain-healthy diet has the most effect when it is combined with social interaction, as well as physical and mental activity.
Follow these tips for better brain health, which can help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease:
- Keep your body weight under control for good brain and body health. Some studies find that people who are obese in middle age are at least twice as likely to develop dementia. Those with high cholesterol and blood pressure also were more likely to have dementia in their older years – by six times!
- Cut down on foods high in fat and cholesterol: Studies indicate that high amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol can clog the arteries; this is associated with a higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Note that good cholesterol – HDL – can protect your brain cells from damage. So, try to eat more unsaturated fats, such as olive oil, and opt for grilling or baking foods rather than frying.
- Boost your intake of foods that protect the brain and body: Research shows that some foods can reduce chances of heart disease, stroke and even protect the brain. Many of these foods are dark skinned fruits and vegetables, including spinach, kale, broccoli, red bell pepper, corn, eggplant and onion. Also try prunes, raisins, blueberries, black berries, raspberries, oranges and grapes. Cold water fish also is full of helpful omega-3 fatty acids – salmon, trout, mackerel and tuna.
- Some vitamins may help: Supplements with vitamin E and C, B12 and folate could help to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s. Also, by eating the foods above, you will be able to increase intake of these vital vitamins.
