Summer is right around the corner. Many are planning or have already made plans for summer vacation trips. But what if you’re a caregiver for someone with dementia, does that mean you have to forego a trip or take one and leave your loved one behind? The answer is a resounding no. You can have a wonderful vacation that includes them. It will just require a little extra planning. The Alzheimer’s Association has provided a few tips that will ensure a safe and enjoyable vacation for all.
1. Routine is important for keeping Alzheimer’s/dementia sufferers on track so choose a place that will be the least disruptive to their normal daily routine.
2. Don’t forget to pack medications, emergency phone numbers, and important legal documents.
3. To minimize melt downs and frustration take a bag that has their medication, change of clothes, snacks, and activities in it when going out for the day. If you are at a loss for what types of activities to include in the bag Mind-Start puzzles and cards are a good choice.
4. Inform the hotel staff ahead of time about your loved ones special needs, if traveling by plane be sure to notify the airline staff as well. This way they will be prepared and aware in case your loved one becomes disoriented or wanders off.
5. Be flexible, travel and go out during the best time of day for them.
