In our last post, we talked about five common Alzheimer’s myths. There are more myths out there about this disease, so we have continued the list below:
#6 Flu Shots Can Cause Alzheimer’s
A theory that linked flu shots to a higher risk of the disease was put forth by a US doctor who had his medical license suspended. In fact, several clinical studies have linked flu shots and other vaccines to a lower risk of the disease, as well as better overall health. One of those studies is here.
#7 Silver Dental Fillings Can Cause Alzheimer’s
The best scientific evidence shows that there is no relationship between silver dental fillings and the disease. The concern has been that ‘silver’ fillings are usually made in part with mercury. Mercury is a heavy metal that can be very toxic to the brain and organs.
Most scientists do not think that dental amalgam is a serious risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease. A study in 1991 by the Dental Devices Panel at FDA concluded there was no evidence that amalgam fillings pose any risk of the disease. Also, an NIH study in 1991 looked at the relationship between the fillings and Alzheimer’s. An analysis by statisticians did not find any association between the disease and fillings.
#8 There Are Therapies That Can Stop Alzheimer’s
At this time, there is no treatment to cure, stop or delay the progression of this terrible disease. There are FDA approved drugs that can slow the worsening of the symptoms for about one year. These drugs work for about 50% of the patients who take them.
While there are no cures for the disease yet, there are many products that you can purchase that can make your loved one’s life easier, as well as the caregiver’s job easier. For example, many of our dining supplies make the eating process much easier for the Alzheimer patient. One good choice is the Amefa Curved Built Up Handle Utensils. These are perfect for people who have decreased use of their hands or range of motion in the wrists. Or, consider the Blue Scooper Plate. This handy item has a reversed curve edge, so that your loved one will have an easier time self feeding.
Please be sure to review our extensive collection of Alzheimer’s dining supplies. These products can really help to make your loved one more independent, and also can help to keep them eating right.
